L-Mental’s New Album – Espejos
Medellin based L-Mental just dropped their newest album, “Espejos” and it is available in an impressive fold-out three-CD anthology/mini-box set which includes their first two albums as well as their lastest. The three member group comprised of KB, Dlak, and Soner, formed in 2004 and have since become a solid force in Colombian hip hop. They released their first 8-song album in 2006 “Creado para sentirlo” and then in 2008 the 16-song CD “Ahora es Cuando” with the standout track “Parte de mi” (below).

On their third release, L-Mental displays a more poetic and personal side, however musically Espejos doesn’t stray from what they’ve already done on their first two albums. The result is 14 more songs in the L-Mental repertoire rather than an album with its own identity. The big exception is their opening track (soundcloud above), simply titled, “Intro” which is a soulful piece that typifies the melancholic sound of Medellin hip hop yet presented with a fresh new sound both thoughtful and graceful, To start you are my reflection, in no way insignificant, our tears together in the tide, your ideas are my kisses, yet I hope these lyrics also contain the fury of my feelings.
With no signs of stopping in sight, Espejos shows L-Mental at a crossroads, from their harsh barrio productions of the past to their deeply powerful and sophisticated hip hop of today, this young trio gives the listener reason to stay tuned. Espejos shows there are some big changes taking place in Colombia’s hip hop scene.
